Skin cancer is the most prevalent cancer in America with more than four million cases diagnosed annually. It is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime. Melanoma, a serious form of the disease, takes the life of one American every hour and it is on the rise more than any other type of cancer.
Outrun the Sun addresses this public health concern by actively engaging in partnerships with organizations to create sun safety and skin cancer prevention programs.
Spokespersons have included:
OTS is teaming with Verizon IndyCar Series Champion, Josef Newgarden, to share sun safety information with race fans across America. Newgarden is featured in print and broadcast public service announcements appearing in the Indianapolis 500 print program and also airing on video boards and on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network. He participates in Outrun the Sun events and promotes the mission through social media. Newgarden, who drives for Team Penske, is entering his fifth year as an IndyCar Series driver.
To generate nationwide interest in sun safety and skin cancer prevention, Outrun the Sun worked with Anderson Cooper who filmed a public service announcement (PSA) on behalf of OTS. The PSA will air as part of an OTS nationwide awareness campaign for sun safety and skin cancer prevention in 2012.
