Research Focus:
Dr. Schatton’s research focuses on the immunobiology of physiological and malignant stem cell systems of the skin. Specifically, his work in the laboratory of Dr. Markus Frank has led to the initial identification of cancer stem cells in human malignant melanoma based on their expression of the chemoresistance mediator ABCB5. His current research efforts are geared towards mechanistically dissecting how melanoma stem cells impact melanomagenesis, neoplastic progression, and cancer therapeutic resistance, with an emphasis on the immunomodulatory and immunoevasive properties of this novel tumor subpopulation.
